Sallie Steger Obituary

Sallie Lynne Fuller Steger, 67, of Pulaski, left this world peacefully on Thursday, September 21, with loved ones by her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jane Stotelmyer Fuller and Lynn Siebert Fuller. She is survived by her son Jamie (grandsons Alex and Will), and daughter Laura, and son-in-law Brent Casteele (granddaughters Camryn & Quinlyn), former husband Doug Steger, who remained a dear part of Sallie’s life, and special family friend Jade Brillheart.

Born in Fort Riley, Kansas on October 12, 1955, Sallie entered this world as a natural light and instantly became the center of her mother’s and father’s life. At an early age, her family moved to Fairfax, which would become her home until she started her college career at Virginia Tech. While studying horticulture at VT, she began a job at Laurel Creek Nursery. It was there that she met and found common interests with Doug, with whom she found a shared love for plants and helping others, factors that would soon after lead to a marriage and growing a family together. Sallie and Doug started and managed a floral and greenhouse business together, The Flower Shoppe, in Pulaski for nearly 25 years. As Sallie had started her career, opened a business, and built a family in the area, she would soon call Pulaski her home.

Throughout her time at The Flower Shoppe, she loved, built relationships with, and helped thousands of customers, impacted and mentored many employees of all ages, volunteered her time and knowledge of plants to children and adults, and made sure to never let you leave without a flower in hand in hopes it would brighten one’s day and serve as a reminder of love.

No matter how you came to know Sallie, she quickly embedded laughter, genuine, and a loving spirit to anyone with whom she crossed paths. Many say, “There was no one like Sallie”, and such a true statement and description allows us to see that regardless of how one's social approach may be perceived by others; remaining genuine and living with an outlook of “to thine own self be true”, made it nearly impossible for anyone who knew her to not love her. To know Sallie was to know what it felt to be loved. Her love remained true and constant to her parents, children, lifelong friends, her church family, her customers, and mostly, the love she had for her grandchildren.

Keeping with Sallie’s wishes, cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life will be led by Pastor Josh Kilbourne at First United Methodist Church of Pulaski, VA on Saturday, September 30 2023, at 4:00 pm.  Immediately following the service, time for loved ones to gather together to share memories and honor Sallie’s life will take place in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sallie’s memory to the local City of Refuge located at 249 Dora Highway, Pulaski VA 24301.

The family extends appreciation, gratitude, and comfort to Blue Ridge Cancer Care (Blacksburg & Pulaski), Commonwealth Assisted Living (Radford), Roanoke Memorial Hospital and NRV Medical Center staff, and special friends who provided support, medical care, and compassion to Sallie during her final year of life.
