Music by The Piano Brothers

May Elkins Howard, 96, of Pulaski passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, September 21.  She was born in London, England in 1923 to the late Annie and George Elkins.  Her early life and that of her late brother Thomas Elkins were heavily influenced by World War 1.  When World War II began May joined the Royal Women’s Auxiliary Air Force where she worked in the signal core.  During this time she met and married Pulaski native, Frank Howard, US Army, and they settled in Pulaski where they raised two daughters, Jill Howard Sandidge (Jim) and the late Alyson Howard Lawson (Pete).  Frank passed away in 1996.  May worked as a reading aide in the Pulaski School System.  She was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church.  She loved to entertain, play bridge, travel, and garden.  Besides her daughter, May is survived by granddaughter Sally Sandidge and her son James, three grandsons, Michael Sandidge (Becca) and their four daughters, Hailey and Ryleigh Sandidge, Alyssa and Emily Summey;  Jonathan Vordermark (Anna) and son Evan; Matthew Vordermark (Annie Gordon) and their children Howie and Fritz.  She is also survived by a niece and nephew and several cousins in England. The family extends gratitude to the wonderful help given to May over the last several years by Traci Delap and Sue Mitchell.  Many thanks to the wonderful folks from Advance Health Care and Good Samaritan Hospice and their loving care.  A service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 5th at noon at Christ Episcopal Church with a reception following.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you might want to make a donation in May’s name to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 975, Pulaski, Va.

Wow, 96 years of strong mind and will. And bridge! And tea! And perhaps a taste of something else? With May's death, God broke the mold of strength and courage, except what she passed on to Jill and Jim and the grands. My life has been blessed to know her since I came into this world. She is rejoicing in Heaven with Frank, Alison, and Jim's parents. Thanks be to God for this wonderful life and her commitment to Christ Church!

Losing a parent is never easy but knowing that they have lived a long and fulfilling life helps. Knowing that they are at peace and where they have longed to be helps. Knowing that they are reunited with loved ones who have been missed for so long helps. There is comfort in knowing that they are amongst such good company and will have been met by loved ones. I will miss my email conversations with May but am happy that she is finally at peace. Her family in the UK will miss her so rest well dear May. Gone but never forgotten.x

Jill, I was not privileged to know your mother, but from messages I have read, it is obvious that she touched many lives. Her service during WWII, leaving her homeland to come to America as a bride, raising two delightful daughters, and enduring the grief of losing your father and Alyson are examples of her fortitude and strength. You were certainly blessed, and she was blessed to have you to care for her. May God grant His strength to you and your family at this difficult time, and may your precious memories bring you peace.

Ms. May was such an inspiration and true "miracle blessing from Papa God " in my life! In the short 3 years that I came to know and love her, she was so precious to me. Her beautiful smile, gorgeous British accent( I could sit and listen to her talk all day!), her dry and funny sense of humor, her love of music and always, always her heartfelt words of love, support and encouragement to me when I needed to hear them the most. I will never forget her Birthday reception last year in the Parish hall at the church and what fun we all had!!! I will miss her so much!!! Jll and Jim and family, please know that all my love, heart, prayers and thoughts are with you all!! I love you all and may our Beloved Jesus hold you all so tightly in His comforting arms of love and strength!!
