The Rev. Vickie Lynn Houk, 69, of Pulaski, Virginia, died suddenly on August 25, 2017 at home. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and her parents. Vickie is survived by her five sisters:  Barbara Brown-Thornton, Minneapolis, Michele Hughey, Oklahoma City, Penny Kaiser, Mary Houk, and Rhonda Boland- all of Rapid City, 7 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews, and her precious purr-babies, Maggie and Angelina.Vickie was born April 5, 1948 in Rapid City, South Dakota.  She attended the University of South Dakota graduating in the Medical Technology field.  She taught Hematology to interning Medical Technology students at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.  She was Hematology Supervisor at the Laboratory of Clinical Medicine in Sioux Falls, SD. During this time Vickie was first introduced to and fell in love with the Episcopal Church.  A good friend invited her to attend Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and she was confirmed in 1982.  She was very active in the Cursillo movement, learning to play guitar, joining others to provide music for Cursillo weekends and other church related events.By the mid 1980’s, Vickie decided to go into the ministry, and attended The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.  She was ordained to the ministry April 19, 1990.  The next six years were spent in the State of Ohio serving several different churches. In the fall of 1996, Vickie was called to be the Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski, Virginia.  She ministered to this Parish and to the community for almost 18 years, retiring in June, 2014.  Vickie was the first woman priest for Christ Episcopal Church.  Her sense of humor and gift of laughter as well as her gift of preaching The Word of God in a gentle, understanding way, has endeared her to all that hear His Word.  She expanded our Outreach work to include our food pantry, and for over ten years included the Adult GED program.  Vickie encouraged more lay leadership in all aspects of Christ Church's ministry.  The Youth program was expanded to meeting every Wednesday evening. During her years in Pulaski, Vickie was active in the Pulaski County Ministerial Association, hospital chaplaincy, Town of Pulaski Economic Development Board, Pulaski County Humane Society, Department of Social Service Board, serving as chairperson, Founding member of Friends of Peak Creek, and most recently A View From Peaks Knob and the Pulaski County Citizens for Education. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church, 144 N.
